TGE

"We are here to create something softer in a fast world — a space where people uplift one another, share honestly, and grow gently together."

A soft place in a loud world Curated. Intentional. Human. One letter. One connection. Every month. Not everyone who applies is accepted A soft place in a loud world Curated. Intentional. Human. One letter. One connection. Every month. Not everyone who applies is accepted
The exchange

Simple by design.
Meaningful by intention.

No algorithms. No feeds. No notifications. Just two people, a prompt, and a postbox.

01
You apply

We review every application personally — looking for kindness, intention, and a genuine readiness to show up for someone else. Not every application is accepted.

02
You are matched

Each month you are carefully paired with a compatible correspondent. You receive their name, address, a monthly theme, and a send-by date.

03
You write

You write an honest letter and post it directly. No intermediaries. No timelines. Just words on paper, sent with care.

"Your potential is limitless. Go after it."

01
You apply

Fill out our application thoughtfully. We ask questions that require genuine reflection — not a checklist of interests, but a real sense of who you are, where you are in life, and how you show up for others.

Applications open on the first of each month.
02
We review your application

Every application is read personally. We look for kindness, self-awareness, emotional readiness, and a genuine willingness to show up for someone else. Not every application is successful — and that is intentional.

You will hear from us within a few days.
03
You receive an acceptance

If accepted, you will receive a personal welcome email and a link to confirm your membership payment. Your spot is held once payment is confirmed.

04
You are matched

At the start of each round, you are carefully paired with a compatible correspondent based on life stage, shared topics, and complementary support styles. You receive their first name, mailing address, the month's theme, writing prompts, and a send-by date.

05
You write your letter

You respond to the monthly prompt — or let something else guide you. There is no correct length, no correct format. Write honestly. Write from where you actually are. Post your letter directly before the send-by date.

You cover the cost of your own postage stamp.
06
You receive a letter

Your correspondent writes to you. There is something particular about opening a physical letter — the handwriting, the weight of the paper, the words chosen by someone who took time to think of you.

07
You reflect, and the next round begins

At the end of each month, we may ask for optional anonymous reflections. You confirm whether you would like to continue. If you do, a new match awaits — a new person, a new theme, a new beginning.

Community

Guidelines
& Values.

a shared understanding

These guidelines exist not as rules to follow out of obligation, but as a shared understanding of what we are building together.

What this is

The Gentle Exchange is a curated letter-writing community for people who want to connect honestly and slowly, through the art of handwritten correspondence.

Each month, you are matched with one other member. You write each other a letter — thoughtful, honest, unhurried — and post it directly to your correspondent's home address.

This is not a social media platform. It is not a therapy service. It is a private space for two people to correspond with genuine care.

Our values

Kindness as a practice, not just a feeling.

We choose our words with care, especially when things are hard.

Confidentiality as a form of respect.

What is shared in a letter stays between correspondents. You do not share, screenshot, or discuss your letters publicly.

Honesty over performance.

We show up as we are, not as we think we should be. Authenticity is more welcome here than a polished version of yourself.

Showing up, even imperfectly.

A short letter sent is worth more than a perfect one never written.

Curiosity over judgement.

We arrive at each other's lives as guests, not critics. We ask questions before we draw conclusions, and we hold space for experiences different from our own.

An inclusive and safe space, for everyone.

We welcome people of all backgrounds, identities, and life experiences. No one is made to feel lesser here for who they are, where they come from, or what they are carrying.

What we ask of you

Write and send your letter each month. When you are matched, you will receive your correspondent's name, address, the month's theme, and a send-by date. Please write and post your letter before that date.

Protect your correspondent's privacy. Their address is for this exchange only — never to be used for any other purpose, shared with anyone, or retained after your correspondence ends.

Hold what is shared with discretion. What your correspondent shares is not yours to discuss, post about, or pass on.

Approach difference with openness. Meet people with curiosity rather than judgement.

What is not welcome here

The following will result in immediate removal from the community, without refund:

  • Letters that are cruel, demeaning, sexually explicit, or intended to harm
  • Any use of a correspondent's address outside of this exchange
  • Harassment of any kind, inside or outside of letters
  • Sharing another member's personal details with anyone
  • Discriminatory language or behaviour of any kind
  • Using membership to solicit, promote, or sell anything

This is a peer community, not a professional service

The Gentle Exchange is built on mutual support between people navigating life. It is not a substitute for professional mental health support, counselling, or crisis services.

If you are going through something serious, we encourage you to seek appropriate professional support. If your correspondent shares something that concerns you for their safety, please contact us immediately at hello@thegentleexchange.com

If something does not feel right

If you receive a letter that makes you feel unsafe, uncomfortable, or concerned, please reach out to us at hello@thegentleexchange.com

You do not need to respond to a letter that has caused you harm. We will take every concern seriously, investigate with care, and act to protect the safety of our members.

Questions

FAQ.

we are happy to help

If you cannot find what you are looking for here, please reach out at hello@thegentleexchange.com — every message is read by a real person.

Do I have to write by hand?+

We encourage handwritten letters — there is something irreplaceable about them. However, if handwriting is not accessible to you for any reason, a typed and printed letter is warmly welcome. What matters most is the honesty and care with which it is written.

What if I don't receive a letter from my correspondent?+

If you have not received a letter within a reasonable time after the send-by date, please let us know. We take this seriously. If a member consistently does not write, they will not be included in future rounds. We will always try to make things right.

Can I be matched with the same person more than once?+

Each month you are matched with a new correspondent, giving you the chance to build connections with different people over time. If you and a past correspondent wish to continue writing independently, you are welcome to do so.

Is my home address safe?+

Your address is shared only with your matched correspondent, for the sole purpose of this exchange. Every member agrees to our community guidelines which strictly prohibit any other use of a correspondent's address. If you ever feel your address has been misused, contact us immediately.

Can I pause my membership?+

You can cancel at any time, and you are always welcome to reapply when the time feels right. Please note that if you cancel and later rejoin, the founding member rate will no longer apply — you will rejoin at the standard rate at that time.

Do I have to follow the monthly theme?+

Each month has a theme and prompts to guide you. You are welcome to use them as a starting point, respond to one prompt specifically, or let something else guide you entirely. What matters is that you write honestly.

Is this available internationally?+

Currently, The Gentle Exchange is primarily based in Australia. International members are welcome to apply — however, please be aware that international postage costs and longer delivery times are your responsibility to manage.

Can I get a refund?+

We do not offer refunds on monthly membership fees in most circumstances. Exceptions are considered when a member experienced conduct that caused them harm and reported it promptly, or when an administrative error on our part meant match details were not received. Please see our Terms of Membership for full details.
